First things first. I. Love. Mechs.
Armored Core is one of my favorite game series of all time and I’m anxiously waiting for the new one in development by From Software.
So when I was watching the Nintendo E3 press video and it faded into a colorful and almost cel shaded stylized world with fast moving mechs I was really excited.
But then I noticed how similar the mech designs looked to Armored Core. Like, VERY similar.
From the sharp edged aesthetic on the mechs, the laser blade, fast paced movement with boosters, shoulder mounted missile pods, and pretty much all the weapons being held, I was sure it was the new Armored Core. Which was disappointing, at first.
I personally really want a new Armored Core that expands upon the 4 and 4A universe. A gritty darker world with a high-tech futuristic look to it. A continuation of the previous games. (not so much V and Verdict Day)
But as the trailer ended, the From Software logo never appeared and I was left wondering what I just saw. A brand new mech game with the speed, action, and designs that looked very much like Armored Core.
Daemon X Machina is a fast paced mech action game coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2019.
Take your Arsenal, a fully customizable powered suit, out for an array of missions to surmount the enemy at all costs. Choose and equip your Arsenal with a multitude of weapons, obtain more from downed enemy Arsenals, and swap them on the fly to suit your strategy in the face of ever-changing threats.
Producer: Kenichiro Tsukuda
Mechanical Concept Design: Shoji Kawamori
The reason why this game looks so much like an Armored Core game are because of Kenichiro Tsukuda, the producer, and Shoji Kawamori, the mech designer.
Tsukuda was the producer for Armored Core 1-3 and Kawamori was responsible for the mech designs of all Armored Core games before Armored Core 4.
Both now on a new project for a different development team yet obviously bringing their past mech action game visions with them.
The more I watch the trailer the more on board I become. The combat is much more akin to the type of mech game I like. Although I do enjoy Mechwarrior and Chromehounds, the fast paced, air/ground, boost dodging, 20 target lock on missile pods are more my thing. I could do without the heavy metal music though.
It makes me wonder what the next Armored Core will look like. Will it use similar designs like in the past or will they go in a new direction?
It would be odd to come out with a new Armored Core where the ACs look exactly like a separate games mechs. On the other hand I really loved Kawamori’s mech designs and I don’t want Armored Core to deviate from them.
I have no idea what the relationship is like between Tsukuda & Kawamori & FROM SOFTWARE. If Armored Core uses similar mech designs would it be offensive or disrespectful to Kawamori?
I really don’t know the answer to these questions but whatever the case is, I’m definitely picking this up when it releases in 2019.
