To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Diablo franchice, Blizzard has announced new content coming to Diablo 3.
First is the Necromancer. The Diablo 2 fan favorite is making a return in Diablo 3. It will be a part of a paid character pack coming some time in 2017. The pack will include:
- The Necromancer character
- An in-game pet
- Two additional character slots
- Two additional stash tabs (on pc)
- A portrait frame, pennant, banner, and banner sigil
No price has been announced for the pack yet.
Here’s Blizzard on what to expect from the necromancer:
Necromancers can expect darker, more controlled gameplay centered around the raw materials of life: blood and bone. Grounded in a philosophical, pragmatic approach to life and death, they’re more like a calculated conductor of the darkest arts. Deadly serious in their practice, they are the experts of curses and reanimation—and their pets obey their every command.
Secondly are two new areas that can be accessed through the adventure mode, The Shrouded Moors and The Temple of the First Born. This will be free to those who have the Reaper of Souls expansion. Also coming in 2017.
Lastly they announced a recreation of Diablo 1 inside of Diablo 3. This will include 16 floors and 4 bosses, movement in only 8 directions, and graphical filters to closely match the look and feel of the original game. You’ll be using your existing Diablo 3 characters.
My take on this is that it must have been cheaper to use Diablo 3 assets then to try and remaster the original game. This is really disappointing news though because with the hints that Blizzard was hiring for a new Diablo game and taking a look at remastering their old titles, this is one of the worst outcomes for fans of the original.
I certainly don’t want to run around Diablo with the Diablo 3 classes and mechanics. It’s great that this is a free update and that they want to introduce the original game to a younger audience, but I feel like this isn’t going to do the original justice. It won’t feel like Diablo without the original gameplay design behind it. If you want people to experience the greatness of the original, remaster it!
Bringing back the necromancer is cool and all, but I’m worried how they are going to transfer all the awesome abilities over to Diablo 3. In the end, Diablo 3 is still a boring rift fest and I’m not sure what they could do to bring me back. Not even my favorite class in all of video games may be enough.
